š Only one week away before the start of COP27 on climate change - 6/18 November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt šŖš¬
š£āEvery year a new "COP" - Conference of the Parties, an international conference organized by the UN - brings together countries from around the world to collectively decide on measures to save our planet. There are COPs for the fight against climate change š„µ, for biodiversity š and for the fight against desertification šµ
š COP #1 took place in 1995 in Berlin. It changes countries every year: during these summits, countries negotiate together a roadmap and make commitments š¤ to save our environment and fight against the deterioration of the earth due to human activity š
šāāļø Who attends the COP?
This event can bring together up to 40,000 people, the main actors being international delegations, teams of negotiators representing each country, but also NGOs, companies, unions, journalists, scientists, citizens...
šÆ What is the objective of COP27?
The major challenge for this climate COP is to agree on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The negotiators are basing their work on the IPCC reports. This year, COP27 aims to reduce global CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 šØšØšØ
ā»ļø What progress can we expect?
Finding an agreement among 196 countries is not an easy task, but we absolutely must lower our greenhouse gas emissions much faster.
š§š»āš¬ Scientists' recommendation:
- Reduce energy demand,
- Get out of fossil fuels,
- Increase financial aid to vulnerable countries,
- Develop CO2 capture.
š The organization of the COPs is an excellent initiative at the global level. Our future also depends on the actions of investors š°, companies š and citizens š. We must change our habits and consume differently š. But the impetus must first and foremost come from the States š, which have the power to put in place binding laws āļø and rules for the market, as well as consistent infrastructures š and ambitious policies š
